Printmaking

1967/Swirl

The 1967/Swirl print is complete. It is a “companion” to my larger 1967 Swirl painting from the Sixties Paintings series. The print is a 2-color laser-cut linoleum block printed by Brent Bond at Santo Press. Stay tuned–there may be a few more prints in this Psychedelic series. Plans are in the works for some small editions using decorative chine collé papers.

1967/Swirl is 11 x 14 inches on Hahnemuhle paper 15 x 17.5 inches; printed in an edition of 30. It is available for $250.

Collaborative Reduction Prints with Brent Bond

Brent Bond and I just signed a new collaborative print called Swirladelic. It is the second collaboration print we have done and I couldn’t be happier! Both prints are published by Santo Press. Swirladelic and Psychedelic Blues are from my psychedelic-inspired series loosely based on art and patterns from the sixties.

Brent is the true star of these 3-color reduction prints–he is the one who hand-carved them, selected the color palette and printed them. All I did was provide the artwork.

Swirladelic is priced at $225 and Psychedelic Blues is $100.

There are two other prints in this series, one was a 2018 calendar print for Mesa Contemporary Art Center (1966) and the other a combination archival digital print with laser-cut linoleum block relief print (1966 Tie-Dye) They can be viewed in this portfolio.

Trying to Stay Centered

This has been a nerve-racking experience for sure! Have you ever attempted hand-painting (pristine B&W line) prints with watercolors? One tiny drip or blob on the pure white border and it’s ruined. Yikes! I almost needed to hold my breath while painting these three prints and was constantly talking to myself to stay calm and centered on the task. I’ve 2 more to go for a variable edition of 5 and I sure do hope I can complete 5 without a mistake or a heart attack. If not, it will be a variable edition of 4 (or 3).  I think I need a drink–it’s been all kinds of stressful for me today.

This is my starting point–the prints began as simply a one-color (black) laser-cut linocut on Rives BFK. (Printed at Santo Press by Brent Bond.)

And three (of five?) I’ve painted thus far.

New Print! Feather Flower–Red

This is the first in a series of three prints. It is a one-color relief print completed this week by Brent Bond of Santo Press. Another laser-cut linoleum block, Feather Flower–Red was hand-inked and printed in an edition of 10. The second iteration in the series is being printed now and should be ready to be signed in a couple of days. It is a 2-color print in vivid colors of cobalt blue and chartreuse. The third edition will be a 3-color reduction print. Flower Feather–Red is the 64th edition Brent and I have completed in just 2 years–setting a world record, I think. We are on fire!

Feather Flower–Red is available for $400 (unframed).
